Sewing Machine Tips & Tricks

Sewing Machine Tips

Whether you are a beginner sewer or an expert. Everyone needs sewing machine tips from experts to increase the quality of their projects. With the sewing machine tips below, your projects are about to get a lot more high quality. Below we cover sewing machine basics that even the experts tend to forget.

Read the Machine Manual

This may seem obvious to some, but believe it or not, most sewers skip this step. People tend to get an upgrade on a sewing machine and think they already know how sewing machines work so they do not need to read the manual.

The problem with not reading the manual is, many new sewing machines come with new features. These features will make sewing much easier than you may not have come across before. So always read your machine manual when you get a new sewing machine to ensure you do not miss anything.

I use to make this exact mistake, I bought the Brother XR3140 Sewing Machine and it came with computerized features that I assumed would be self-explanatory. Believe me, there are always things you miss, so make sure you read the manual!

Sewing Machine Needle Tips

An important tip is to change your sewing machine needles quite frequently. You would be surprised how many sewers overlook this and sew with the same needle for very long periods of time, sometimes years…

The issue with not changing your needle is that it can cause issues when sewing. when I use to work at a sewing machine repair shop we got quite a few customers all to come in with the same types of issues such as bird nests under the fabric and they were under the impression it was something to do with the tension. Now do not get me wrong, incorrect tension settings can cause bird nests under the fabric, but we found out that a lot of the times it was due to the customer not changing their needle on a regular basis.

We advise having multiple spare needles of different styles and different sizes. For example, a good combination of needles to use would be;

  • Universal needle
  • Leather needles
  • Jersey needles
  • Embroidery needle
  • Denim needles

When choosing which needle you are going to use, you need to make sure you choose the correct size needle. Also the type of thread you are going to use. A good tip for choosing the correct size needle is this. Place a thread through the needle that you think is the right size before placing the needle on the sewing machine. Once the thread is through the needle, hold the thread up and tilt it so the needle slides up and down the thread. If the needle slides down the thread easily then you have the correct size needle. If the needle catches on the thread while sliding down, then you do not have the correct size needle.

Run a Test After Setting Up the Sewing Machine.

This may also seem obvious, but sewers love to cut corners, and this is a vital mistake. Before starting a project, you should always use test pieces of fabric to test your stitches. This is so the stitch comes out just the way you need it.

There are various factors which can affect the actual stitch. For example, if you start using a thicker thread, then you will need to adjust your tension.

You may also put a new sewing needle in and change your stitch length. All these variables change the look of the stitch and you do not want to start your project with a stitch that you do not like. So, remember, after settings up your sewing machine the way you like it, always use a piece of fabric to test the stitches on.

Easy Needle Threader

This is one of my favorite sewing machine tips. Some sewing machines do not come with the luxury of an easy needle threader, if this is the case with your sewing machine then we suggest you buy one. You can get them at most sewing shops and even online at Amazon.

Needle threaders are small objects with a piece of wire on. You place the wire of the needle threader through the needle, wrap the thread around the needle threader and then pull the needle threader back through the needle. It makes threading needles so easy and quick, it will save you a lot of time, so I recommend following this tip.

Sewing in Straight Lines

When sewing it is important to make sure the stitches are in straight lines. It makes your projects look a lot more professional. When using a sewing machine to sew stitches, you can line the fabric up with the edge of the needle plate to ensure that you are always sewing in straight lines. This is a very handy technique especially for beginners that I recommend to everyone.

Play Around With Your Machine Before Starting Projects

As stated at the start of this sewing machine tips article, you need to learn your sewing machine. This is so you know how to incorporate all the different features of it to create your projects the best you can. So, what I advise is you read from your manual, so you understand all the features. Then you start using all the features on test pieces of fabrics.

Get used to what all the different stitches look like and how you can adjust the different controls to change the outcome of the stitches. Wait until you can create stitches on a consistent basis that you like the look of. Make sure you use every feature multiple time, so you do not get scared of using them on projects. This is what I think is the most important tips from all the sewing machine tips I have learned.  A sewing machine may just be a tool, but it is the most important tool for sewers as it can make or break your entire project.

You can even use this tip for hand sewing, which a lot of people who own a sewing machine do.

Sewing Machine Maintenance

One of the most ignored common practices is looking after your sewing machine. Damaged or dirty sewing machines will affect your projects in negative ways, I guarantee it.

First, you want to have a cover for your sewing machine. Don’t worry you do not have to buy one! Get creative and make your first project to create a stunning looking cover. You only have to do this once, but it will prevent your sewing machine from getting dirty while it is not in use.

Second, make sure you place the sewing machine in a safe place. The last thing you want is to have an accident and then it gets broken without you realizing.

Lastly, check the parts monthly, you want to make sure there’s so dirt like fluff, etc stuck in the feed dogs or bobbin holder as this can affect the performance when using the sewing machine. Following basic maintenance, steps are vital in ensuring a high-quality project every time. Do not skip this, no matter how much you hate it.

  1. I never thought to consider reading the sewing machine manual just in case there are features that you don’t know how to use. My brother wants to get more into sewing and he wants to buy my sewing machine off of me, except it’s broken. I’ll be sure to pass this tip onto my brother after I find a company that fixes sewing machines.
